Delivering Effective Pipe Cleaning in the Maritime Industry
Just before the Christmas break we delivered a critical and highly complicated pipe cleaning project for one of our prestigious maritime customers.
At the end of the project our customer took this photo for their internal communications showing just two individuals from Nivalis onsite. But what you can’t see in this photo is the many people and suppliers who are critical to enabling a project like this one to be completed.
Martin Herbert, our Engineering Director, gives a brief insight into who did what to ensure this project was completed effectively.

Equipment Preparation
Wojciech Kocaja, Nivalis Quality Lead, spent three weeks before the project began, commissioning the NIV500, running and verifying cleaning cycles, checking and flushing hoses, valves, tees bends and a myriad of other fittings so that everything was fit for purpose for the project.
Transport and Ice Logistics
Dom Ash, Nivalis Design Lead, repackaged the most cleanable and hygienic NIV500 in our fleet into one of our specially adapted containers, integrated remote pressure sensors and new flow meters into the NIV500 HMI system and ran system checks so that ice could be delivered at the push of a button onsite.
Efficient Customer Service
Sean Ashton, Nivalis Commercial Director worked tirelessly to make the necessary commercial arrangements with the customer in record time. Getting these arrangements in place quickly is crucial to ensuring the project can get started on the ground.
Reliable and Flexible Suppliers
There were many suppliers and contractors throughout this project who enabled us to deliver our work smoothly and efficiently. These included:
A fantastic stainless steel fabricator that stopped all other work the moment I arrived at their premises to turn round 15 special flange adapters in 48 hours ready to be delivered so the customer could start fitting a week before the project was due to start.
A brilliant refrigeration engineer who carried out checks on the system prior to shipping, and noticed an erroneous sensor reading, replacing the sensor there and then, preventing a possible breakdown onsite.
The diligent electrical contractor who tightened every electrical terminal in all four control panels to prevent any vibration from transport causing connection problems.
Our stainless fittings provider who put all the additional parts we needed for the job on hold for us while we waited confirmation the job would proceed.
Our hose supplier who turned round an order of 30 specially made short hoses for use in confined spaces in 10 days ready to ship to site.
A specialist haulage contractor who was able to lift and shift our 8000 kg container, five pallet sized crates, two stillages of hose and a host of other kit required, all in one load.
A fantastic supplier of specialist site containment equipment which enabled us to safely operate on a dockside without risk to the marine environment.
Our chemical supplier for expediting FPD material and demineralised water for system cleaning.
This is just part of the list which would go on and on and on!
In conclusion, this simple photo is actually of two people on site, standing on the shoulders of a much bigger team in the background.
It is this teamwork and cross organisation working that enables us, Nivalis, to deliver multiple, highly effective and successful Ice Pigging projects.
