Our Ice Pigging Process

We work collaboratively with you to understand your process, your cleaning challenges and what you need to achieve.

Ice Pigging is a proven cleaning technology that uses an ice slurry to remove contamination, deposits and biofilm from process pipework and equipment.

Its unique properties allow it to flow through pipework while applying physical wall shear to surfaces, helping remove material that conventional cleaning methods can leave behind.

Our Ice Pigging Process

Helping you navigate the Ice Pigging process

We understand that Ice Pigging may be a new technique for many of our customers. We therefore work with you throughout the process, explaining how it works, where it can be applied and the potential benefits to your operation.

Our aim is simple: to provide an effective, practical cleaning solution that saves time, reduces resource use and improves process performance.

First we create a bespoke plan

First we create a bespoke plan

It all starts with a chat.

We want to know what your challenges are so that we can give you the right solution. From here we can then build you a bespoke plan of action.

Ice Pigging utilises the special properties of an ice slurry mixture, manufactured by Nivalis designed and built machinery. The ice that is produced has an additive to maintain the freezing point below zero (usually around -5 degrees Celsius). There are different options when it comes to this additive which we will discuss with you to ensure the right type is used for your system.

We will also need to talk through the system's pipe layout with you to ensure we calculate the volumes of ice required for your system.

There are also several different ways in which we can deliver the ice slurry to your system - we will talk through all the options with you working to overcome any logistical issues where possible.

Initial feasibility assessment through to system integration

Initial feasibility assessment through to system integration

The Nivalis engineering team are able to work through a whole project life cycle from initial suitability assessment to onsite optimisation and in service support.

Ice Pigging is a unique process and as such is very well suited to a huge number of applications but is not suitable for all. As a result, the first step of any enquiry is to assess the suitability of Ice Pigging for a particular application. This begins with a desktop exercise using key process parameters such as product or debris type, line geometry, and operating conditions. The Nivalis team use their experience of performance over many years to carry out an initial sense check and suggest the scale of equipment required for an operation. If the financial benefits stack up at this stage, then for new untested applications the normal process is to carry out a trial starting, if possible, with a sample of pipe at the Nivalis technical centre before moving to full scale trials on a customer's site.

Nivalis have a range of trial equipment and have traveled world wide carrying out trials for customers. Trials are always carried out with scientific diligence with a set of key validation criteria established early in the process. This enables customers to make objective decisions on progressing with the technology as a factory installation or regular onsite service.

Once the plan is in place, Nivalis can:

  • 1.

Deliver ice production and delivery equipment to site for the duration of work.

  • 2.

Work with the customer and other contractors on any enabling works.

  • 3.

Supply ice delivery and waste removal hoses, along with interface adapters as required.

  • 4.

Work with the customer on pre and post condition assessments as part of cleaning validation.

  • 5.

Carry out pre Ice Pigging flow and integrity testing.

  • 6.

Run Ice Pigging production and delivery operations.

  • 7.

Work with the customer and contractors to carry out post Ice Pigging flushing and system reinstatement.

  • 8.

Produce detailed post operation technical analysis and reporting.
