US based global personal care manufacturer
A conventional production facility consisting of large ingredients tanks, large mixing tanks, delivery lines with the typical inline equipment of valves, pumps, changes in diameter, bends and changes in height in the pipework.
The average pipework diameter is 3” (75mm) and varying lengths of between 50 and 150 feet (18m – 30m). The standard Nivalis NIV500 ice machine was selected. This machine has a 500kg (1100 lb) capacity ice storage tank and offers a versatile process solution which can produce up to 1100kg (2400 lb) of ice per 24 hours. It can be used on multiple production lines and offers a quick and simple method of manufacturing and delivering ice.
Once delivered into the pipe, the ice slurry forms a “plug” with the product and is propelled through the pipe by a water push. Once detected by a conductivity sensor, the ice slurry is then diverted to drain, minimising product waste and carrying as much product as possible into the product storage tanks.
Product recovery instead of waste
Our customer recovers approximately 5400kg per month of product that would otherwise have gone to waste. Other benefits associated with adopting Ice Pigging includes improved cleaning effectiveness, this in turn can lead to shorter clean in place (CIP) cycles
Conclusion - our customer benefitted significantly from Ice Pigging and has seen a step change in product recovery which has directly impacted on cost savings and production efficiency.
